Kathak Classes in Singapore
North India’s most graceful classical dance form — where rhythm meets storytelling through mesmerising footwork and expressive movement.
The Storytelling Dance of North India
Kathak is one of the eight major classical dance forms of India, originating from the travelling storytellers (Kathakars) of ancient northern India. The word ‘Katha’ means story, and Kathak is, at its heart, the art of telling stories through movement. Over centuries, it absorbed influences from Hindu temple traditions and the Mughal court, evolving into a dance form renowned for its lightning-fast spins (chakkar), intricate footwork (tatkar), and deeply expressive gestures.
At ANASFA, our Kathak curriculum honours both the Lucknow and Jaipur gharana traditions while making the art form accessible to complete beginners. Students progress from foundational footwork and hand gestures through complex compositions and expressive pieces, guided by experienced gurus who bring both technical precision and artistic depth to every class.
Whether your child is drawn to the beauty of spinning or you are an adult captivated by the elegance of this dance form, our Kathak program develops strong rhythm, graceful movement, expressive storytelling, and genuine stage confidence — one grade at a time.
What You Will Learn

What Parents & Students Say
What is the right age to start learning Kathak?
Children can begin as early as age 4 at ANASFA. At this age, classes focus on basic rhythm, simple footwork, and coordination in a fun, structured environment. There is no upper age limit — we welcome adult beginners of all ages.
Does my child need any prior dance experience?
Not at all. Our curriculum starts from the very basics. Every student begins at Grade 1 regardless of age, ensuring a strong foundation in posture, tatkar, and rhythm before progressing.
Is Kathak only for girls?
Absolutely not. Kathak has a long tradition of exceptional male dancers. At ANASFA, we welcome students of all genders. Many of our male students find Kathak’s rhythmic complexity and athletic footwork especially engaging.
How long does it take to learn impressive spins (chakkar)?
Basic single and double spins are introduced in the early grades and most students become comfortable with them within the first year. Complex continuous chakkar sequences develop over several grades as balance and technique mature.
Are classes available on weekdays and weekends?
Yes. ANASFA offers both weekday and weekend batch options across all 6 branches. This flexibility makes it easy to fit classes into school and work schedules.
What should students wear to Kathak class?
Students typically wear a comfortable salwar kameez or churidar. Ghungroo (ankle bells) are introduced at the appropriate grade level. Your teacher will guide you on exactly what is needed.
