Kathak Classes in Singapore

North India’s most graceful classical dance form — where rhythm meets storytelling through mesmerising footwork and expressive movement.

The Storytelling Dance of North India

Kathak is one of the eight major classical dance forms of India, originating from the travelling storytellers (Kathakars) of ancient northern India. The word ‘Katha’ means story, and Kathak is, at its heart, the art of telling stories through movement. Over centuries, it absorbed influences from Hindu temple traditions and the Mughal court, evolving into a dance form renowned for its lightning-fast spins (chakkar), intricate footwork (tatkar), and deeply expressive gestures.

At ANASFA, our Kathak curriculum honours both the Lucknow and Jaipur gharana traditions while making the art form accessible to complete beginners. Students progress from foundational footwork and hand gestures through complex compositions and expressive pieces, guided by experienced gurus who bring both technical precision and artistic depth to every class.

Whether your child is drawn to the beauty of spinning or you are an adult captivated by the elegance of this dance form, our Kathak program develops strong rhythm, graceful movement, expressive storytelling, and genuine stage confidence — one grade at a time.

What You Will Learn

Our Kathak curriculum is carefully structured to build technical mastery, expressive depth, and performance confidence progressively across all grades.

Chakkar

Mesmerising Spins

Abhinaya

Expressive Storytelling

Explore the art of storytelling through facial expressions, hand gestures (mudras), and body language. Learn to convey the full range of emotions (navarasas) and bring mythological narratives to life.

Taal & Laya

Rhythmic Precision

Understand the complex rhythmic framework of Kathak. Learn taal cycles (Teentaal, Jhaptaal, Ektaal), bol recitation, layakari (tempo variations), and the mathematical precision underlying all Kathak compositions.

Thumri & Bhajan

Poetic Compositions

At intermediate and advanced levels, learn expressive compositions including thumri, bhajan, and tarana — developing the ability to interpret poetry and devotional music through movement.

Theory & Heritage

Gharana Traditions

Study the history of Kathak from its origins in temple storytelling through its evolution in the Mughal courts, the major gharanas, and its place in the broader Indian classical arts tradition.

Absolutely not. Kathak has a long tradition of exceptional male dancers. At ANASFA, we welcome students of all genders. Many of our male students find Kathak’s rhythmic complexity and athletic footwork especially engaging.

Basic single and double spins are introduced in the early grades and most students become comfortable with them within the first year. Complex continuous chakkar sequences develop over several grades as balance and technique mature.
