Hindustani Vocal Classes in Singapore
Explore the richness of North Indian classical music tradition — develop raga-based improvisation, taan, and emotive singing techniques.
The Soulful Tradition of North Indian Classical Music
Hindustani music is the classical music tradition of North India, with roots stretching back thousands of years. Having evolved through the influences of ancient Hindu traditions and the medieval Mughal courts, Hindustani vocal is renowned for its deep emphasis on raga exploration, emotional depth, and the art of improvisation. It is a music system that values the journey of a single raga — unfolding its mood, character, and beauty through patient, meditative exploration.
At ANASFA, our Hindustani Vocal program builds a strong, systematic foundation in this rich tradition. Students progress from basic swara exercises and simple ragas through complex bandish (compositions), taan patterns, and the art of improvisation — guided by experienced gurus who bring authenticity and structured pedagogy to every lesson.
Whether your child is beginning their musical journey or you are an adult drawn to the meditative depth of Hindustani music, our program develops vocal technique, raga knowledge, rhythmic mastery, and expressive singing ability — one grade at a time.
What You Will Learn
Our Hindustani Vocal curriculum is carefully structured to build technical mastery, expressive depth, and performance confidence progressively across all grades.
Swara & Alankar
Foundational Exercises
Master the swaras (Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni) and foundational exercises (alankars) that build pitch accuracy, voice strength, and essential muscle memory. Develop proper breath support and vocal modulation from the very first class.
Raga Exploration
Melodic Mastery
Progressively learn the structure, mood, and personality of major Hindustani ragas. Develop the ability to identify ragas by ear, sing their characteristic phrases (pakad), and improvise within a raga’s melodic framework.
Taal & Rhythm
Rhythmic Foundation
Understand the rhythmic cycles (Teentaal, Jhaptaal, Ektaal, Rupak, and more) that underpin all Hindustani compositions. Learn to maintain taal, recognise rhythmic patterns, and coordinate singing with tabla accompaniment.
Bandish & Composition
Musical Repertoire
Learn the rich repertoire of Hindustani compositions — from simple chhota khyal through vilambit and drut bandish, dhrupad, and semi-classical forms like thumri and bhajan. Develop proper pronunciation and emotional expression.
Taan & Improvisation
Creative Expression
At intermediate and advanced levels, develop the art of taan (rapid melodic runs), bol-taan, sargam improvisation, and raga alapana — the creative skills that distinguish a trained Hindustani vocalist.
Theory & Heritage
Musical Knowledge
Study the theoretical framework of Hindustani music (thaat system, raga-rasa theory, time theory of ragas), the gharana traditions, and the contributions of legendary musicians.

What Parents & Students Say
What is the right age to start learning Hindustani vocal?
Children can begin as early as age 4 at ANASFA. Early classes focus on basic swara recognition and simple singing in a fun setting. There is no upper age limit — we welcome adult beginners.
How is Hindustani vocal different from Carnatic vocal?
Both are Indian classical music traditions. Hindustani music originates from North India and places greater emphasis on improvisation and raga exploration. Carnatic music comes from South India and is more composition-focused. ANASFA offers both as separate courses.
Do I need to know Hindi to learn Hindustani vocal?
No. While many compositions are in Hindi, Braj Bhasha, or Sanskrit, your guru will teach proper pronunciation as part of the curriculum. Language understanding develops naturally through learning.
Does my child need any prior musical experience?
No prior experience is needed. Our curriculum starts from the very first swara and every student begins at Grade 1.
What equipment or materials are needed?
A tambura/shruti box app (your teacher will recommend one), a notebook for notation, and a quiet practice space at home. No expensive equipment is required.
Are classes available on weekdays and weekends?
Yes. ANASFA offers both weekday and weekend batch options across all 6 branches.
