Carnatic Vocal Classes in Singapore
The foundational voice of South Indian classical music — build mastery in swaras, ragas, and compositions through systematic, guru-guided training.
The Devotional Voice of South India
Carnatic music is one of the world’s oldest and most sophisticated classical music systems, originating in South India and rooted in devotion, mathematics, and centuries of artistic tradition. Built on the framework of 72 melakartha ragas and a rich repertoire of compositions by the great Trinity — Thyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, and Syama Sastri — Carnatic vocal is both a deeply spiritual practice and a rigorous intellectual discipline.
At ANASFA, our Carnatic Vocal program is designed to build a strong, systematic foundation from the very first note. Students progress from basic swaras and sarali varisais through complex ragas, kritis, and concert-level compositions, guided by experienced gurus who bring authentic tradition and pedagogical clarity to every lesson.
Whether your child is beginning their musical journey or you are an adult exploring classical vocals for the first time, our program develops pitch accuracy, raga knowledge, rhythmic sense, and expressive singing ability — one grade at a time.
What You Will Learn
Our Carnatic Vocal curriculum is carefully structured to build technical mastery, expressive depth, and performance confidence progressively across all grades.
Swara & Sarali Varisai
Foundational Exercises
Master the seven swaras (Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Da, Ni) and foundational exercises including sarali varisai, janta varisai, and alankarams. Develop accurate pitch, voice modulation, and essential muscle memory for classical singing.
Raga Knowledge
Melodic Framework
Progressively learn the structure, mood, and characteristic phrases of major ragas. Develop the ability to identify, sing, and eventually improvise within ragas — the melodic framework that defines Carnatic music.
Tala & Rhythm
Rhythmic Precision
Understand the rhythmic cycles underlying all Carnatic compositions. Learn to maintain tala (Adi, Rupaka, Misra Chapu, and more), recognise rhythmic patterns, and coordinate singing with precise rhythmic counting.
Kriti & Composition
Sacred Repertoire
Learn the rich repertoire of Carnatic compositions — from simple geetams and swarajatis to complex kritis by the Trinity and other vaggeyakaras. Render compositions with correct pronunciation, bhava, and musical grammar.
Manodharma
Creative Improvisation
At advanced levels, explore the art of creative improvisation — including raga alapana, neraval, kalpanaswaram, and viruttam — the hallmark of a mature Carnatic musician.
Theory & Heritage
Musical Knowledge
Study the mathematical framework of Carnatic music (melakartha system, gamakas, sruti), the lives of the great composers, and the cultural significance of Carnatic music in the broader Indian arts tradition.

What Parents & Students Say
What is the right age to start learning Carnatic vocal?
Children can begin as early as age 4 at ANASFA. At this age, classes focus on basic swara recognition, simple voice exercises, and rhythm awareness in a fun, structured setting. There is no upper age limit — we welcome adult beginners.
Does my child need any musical background?
No prior experience is needed. Our curriculum starts from the very first swara. Every student begins at Grade 1, building a solid foundation in pitch, rhythm, and voice control before progressing.
Do I need to know Tamil or any Indian language?
While many compositions are in Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit, or Kannada, no prior language knowledge is required. Your guru will teach proper pronunciation as part of the curriculum, and understanding develops naturally.
How is Carnatic vocal different from Hindustani vocal?
Both are Indian classical traditions. Carnatic music originates from South India and is structured around the 72 melakartha raga system, with emphasis on composed music. Hindustani music comes from North India and places more emphasis on improvisation. ANASFA offers both as separate courses.
Are classes available on weekdays and weekends?
Yes. ANASFA offers both weekday and weekend batch options across all 6 branches.
What does my child need for class?
Students need a tambura/shruti box app (your teacher will recommend one), a notebook for writing swaras and notation, and a quiet practice space at home. No expensive equipment is required.
Which branches offer Carnatic Vocal?
Carnatic Vocal is available at all 6 ANASFA branches — Yishun, Sengkang, Tampines, Serangoon, Woodlands, and Farrer Park.
Can I book a trial class before enrolling?
